Mission and Purpose

The Houston Pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) serves journalists and journalism students and educators throughout the greater Houston area and surrounding counties. It is one of three pro chapters in Texas; the state also has seven campus chapters.

The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry through the daily work of its roughly 6,000 members; works to inspire and educate current and future journalists through professional development; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press through its advocacy efforts.  SPJ is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty.

The Houston chapter focuses on professional development and networking as well as ethics, diversity, and student relations.  We hold monthly programs on different topics, ranging from panel discussions about niche journalism to trainings in the use of Google’s advanced tools.

We are a growing chapter and would love to have you join us!
